Hello and thank you for your interest in One Housing.

While I have only just taken up my post here as Chief Executive, it’s already very clear that change is in the air. That’s one of the things that attracted me to join the organisation and I hope, like me, you’ll relish the opportunity to get on-board and make a difference for our thousands of residents and customers.

One Housing has a successful track record. We were one of the first housing associations to embrace commercial development as a way of funding our affordable homes programme. Thanks to a buoyant sales market we have outperformed our own forecasts and are one of the least reliant on public funding across our entire sector. Last year alone we made a post-tax surplus of £82m on a turnover of £255.6m and built 656 homes of which 607 were at below market rents.

We have also diversified to create a broad portfolio of other projects including growth into older people’s housing with care, facilities management and even hospitality in the shape of our backpacker’s hostel in Soho.

All of this has helped us to grow our stock of both affordable and market-priced homes to around 16,000 units and to continue to be a major care provider in London and the South East.

The Government’s 1% rent cut has led to belt-tightening for all housing associations. ‘Value added’ services such as helping residents into work have often been the first to be cut. That’s something we’ve been able to avoid – last year we invested close to £1m into this kind of service and supported 228 people into work, 756 into training and a further 142 into volunteering.

This is just the tip of the iceberg so clearly there is much to be proud of. But we are ambitious and there is so much more that we want to do. And to help us with that we need to modernise. We have just embarked on a major transformation project – One Future. Significant investment in new IT systems sits at the heart of this programme. This will revolutionise how we work and hugely improve our efficiency and customer service. But One Future is not just about technology. It’s about adapting and evolving across the business to ensure that we are ahead of the pack and well equipped to deliver on our ambitions and improve our transparency and accountability.

To help us move forward we need new people, new skills, new experience and new energy. So we’re recruiting to a range of senior posts – both executive and non-executive – to drive our transformation forward and strengthen both our governance and leadership. This is a crucial time for One Housing – the need for affordable homes and affordable care have never been higher and both the opportunities and challenges are huge.
